Oxford published the Scofield Reference Bible in 1909 and retained copyright control of the text permanently. In 1967 — the same year Israel seized Jerusalem — Oxford's editors updated the annotations to intensify pro-Zionist content. The institution that controls the text controls the theology. Oxford has never relinquished that control.
Lindsey's 1970 book sold 65 million copies and saturated evangelical culture across three generations. He briefed Pentagon staff, military intelligence committees, and the State Department on dispensationalist end-times theology. Reagan delivered his "evil empire" speech at a 1983 National Association of Evangelicals meeting that Lindsey had addressed. The theology reached the Pentagon before it reached Epic Fury.
Theodor Herzl fails to secure papal endorsement for a Jewish state in Palestine. Pope Pius X refuses. The Catholic route is closed. The decision is made to convert American Protestant churches instead. Samuel Untermeyer identifies the strategic opening.
